A Victory For Strategy by Rydain A Victory For Strategy by Rydain
Strip weiqi - a form of Three Kingdoms diplomacy mainly known to those of us who are always up for excuses to get multiple Dynasty Warriors naked in the same room. I doubt the board makes any real world sense, and I doubt anyone's going to give a serious rat's ass, but I did get 19 rows in there.

The lined block shading was a sketch experiment that I liked enough to keep. The lighting is largely pulled out of wherever the guys are storing their tokens. I'm happy with my progress at faces, hair, and natural posing - including the hands - so I can live with making reasonable illustrative sense for the time being.

Mostly freehanded in Manga Studio, minus some line tooling for the table and mats. For a less mechanical look, I include a stroke-in and stroke-out and rough in the corners by hand.

Time: About 2 weeks after the rough sketch. Coloring took a long evening and change. It was my first go with this parchment-based technique, thus requiring a ton of screwing around with various adjustments and washes as I figured out how much and what sort of color to add. The process was a lot of fun, and it should be more efficient in the future because I have some idea of how to tailor it to my style. Hopefully I can get fancier with it later on.

Don't worry about the board, at least you got the way to hold the stone correct!

A wild Ernie appears!

I did? Now that was a lucky accident. I wanted a "gotcha" pose that looked good from the pinky side and was easy for me to double check with my own hand. Hooray for inadvertent veracity!

I LOVE this style! I can so see this parchment falling out of someone's copy of Art of War. Also gives it a very warm candlelight glow which sets the perfect mood for what is happening in someone's tent late at night. Oh and the subtle grins and smirks....LOVE!

Thank you so much! This could be one of Cao Cao's contributions that archaeologists haven't yet managed to uncover. Pantsless Fridays in Wei might have some purpose beyond drilling the rear flanks. I'll definitely be doing more work in this style - I surprised myself with how well the expressions were enhanced with a bit of light and shadow. So glad you like it!

I knew today was going to end on a good note for me.

*dreamy eyes* Cao Ren may be losing the match, but EVERYONE'S a winner.

Hee! Always glad to oblige. Indeed, this is one of the few methods of negotiation where everybody gets a happy ending, including the audience.
